Cassie Smith, of Amite, LA., studies in the dining room on the Finnjet cruise liner docked at the Port of Baton Rouge, LA., on Wednesday Nov. 9, 2005. She is in the LSU Health Science School, in the physical therapy program. The 705 ft. long cruise ship can houses 1004 Louisiana State University medical students, doctors, and personnel due to the lack of housing from Hurricane Katrina in September. The boat is actually registered in the capital city of Marianham, a small island in Finland. It is nine stories high and has 500 cabins. The boat will be here for 6 months. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is covering the $75,000-a-day cost. (Susan Cohen/WpN) -- Copyright: Susan Cohen/WpN

Ed Kashi, Paramedics working with the Los Angeles Fire...
Ed Kashi, Paramedics working with the Los Angeles Fire Department, assigned to station 65 in Watts, respond to 911 calls. They must deal with hospital overcrowding, ambulance diversions and provide healthcare for members of the local community. In many instances, they deliver primary care for people in the community they serve. This is due to the health insurance problems in America today, where hospitals are overcrowded and people feel they have no alternative for basic health care delivery. This is one of the impacts of having 46 million Americans without health insurance. Paramedic Mike McIndoe works on patient Robert Hannah, who is suffering from chest pain, while on the way to the hospital. Due to the abuse of the system and a lack of education, people use the ambulances and paramedics as a taxi service to the emergency rooms of the area hospitals, which makes fifty million dollars a year for the L.A. City Fire Department but strains the system for those who really need emergency services.

Two brothers at sunset on the Caratasca lagoon, in...
Two brothers at sunset on the Caratasca lagoon, in Puerto Lempira, Honduras, on Monday, September 1, 2008. La Moskitia is an area split between Honduras and Nicaragua and is home of the Miskitos indigenous minority. Of the Honduran Moskitia, 75% of the population live below the poverty line. Women and children are the main victims of the sanitary emergency: 77 out of 1000 children die because of diarrhea, malaria, tuberculosis and malnutrition. The rate of infant mortality is comparable to that of Ghana and Uganda and is mostly due to the lack of infrastructure, medicine, and medical assistance. The main problem is the inaccessibility of the region; it is reachable only by plane or by boat. There are no roads that connect it with the rest of the country. Water is the predominant element in the life of the Miskitos and naturally it is a mean of survival and an enemy at the same time. Honduras is the first exporter of red lobsters in the USA and most of the business is run in this area. The rate of men suffering Decompression Syndrome, which naturally leads to paralysis, is very high and the government doesnt provide any kind of assistance for them nor their families. In the region there is only one purifying water plant which basically serves only the area around the capital Puerto Lempira, leaving the rest of the population in need of drinkable water and subject to get diseases. **USA, Latin America, UK, Australia and Japan Sales Only** -- Copyright: Nanni Fontana/WpN

Ed Kashi, Jeff Blum, mental health coordinator for the...
Ed Kashi, Jeff Blum, mental health coordinator for the Davidson County Sheriffs Department, discusses issues with mental health inmates at the County Jail in Nashville.A large proportion of these inmates are covered by Tenncare, Tennessees medicaid program. TennCare has recently suffered dramatic cuts. Over 190,000 people are without coverage. While it cant be proven that the cuts to TennCare have resulted in more prisoners, it is fact that there are more mental health patients in jail than there are in the mental health institutions. The TennCare cuts are resulting in deaths and extreme suffering and it has become a major strain on emergency rooms and community clinics.

Paramedics and firefighters arrive on the scene of a horrific traffic accident where a pickup truck filled with latino men crashed into a vehicle with an eight month pregnant African American woman. The truck went airborne and landed into the living room of a house on the corner. The woman eventually lost her baby. Paramedics attend to Regina Robertson, 24, who was eight months pregnant. They stabilized her and took her away to the emergency room but she lost her baby later that day.
